Join us for our first section meeting of the new year! Constructing a More Effective Survey: What Moves Minds May Not Move Feet
The survey is one of the most common data collection tools in the quality disciplines and works very well for requirements gathering, priority rankings, and opinion polling. But when we need to understand and impact human behavior, they sometimes don’t do a very good job.
The survey may establish that 7 out of 10 respondents strongly hold an attitude or opinion, but will that disposition trigger a particular purchase, saving for retirement, attendance at a meeting, or a vote at the ballot box?
We’ll discuss the construction of the survey questions themselves using the Theory of Planned Behavior to avoid the common tendency to include only questions on general attitudes about a particular subject, rather than the specific circumstances that will create a desired outcome. We’ll learn the other types of questions to include in the survey to generate a richer understanding of the outcomes of interest and give us the tools to better change behavior.
The issues of sample construction, response rate, and other features of statistical inference will be left to reference materials, as we’ll focus.only on the creation of the survey questions themselves.
