September 2015 Meeting – The role of quality in the transition to Value Based Reimbursement in Healthcare

Many health care providers today receive a payment for each individual service they provide such as a physician visit, surgery, or blood test, and it matters to a lesser extent today whether these services directly improve the patient’s outcome. In other words, providers are paid primarily based on the volume of care they provide, rather than the value of care provided to patients. Emerging value-based reimbursement models increasingly require providers to prove that they’re meeting quality standards and benefitting patients while cutting costs. As a result, providers need actionable information to help them continually measure, monitor, and improve financial and quality performance. Furthermore, if they aren’t on track to meet quality standards, they need to be able to pinpoint root causes: Does performance differ by facility? Which providers are performing best and what can be learned from them?

To thrive in a value-based environment, health systems must develop the sophistication to understand their quality and cost structure in granular detail. Reducing every category of waste — e.g. waste that occurs when work isn’t standardized, waste that stems from unnecessary orders, waste that results from uncoordinated patient care — are all absolutely essential for improving margins.

Do these concepts seem familiar to you as a quality practitioner? If so, join us for a discussion of how quality professionals can support the transition to a value based reimbursement model in healthcare.

Independence Park Beautification Event on 4/18/15 in Newark

41 volunteers and their families participated in this 2nd Annual event (up from 25 volunteers last year…SWEET). The event was co-sponsored by the ASQ NY/NJ Metro Section and The Spanish Tavern (our Section’s home away from home) located on McWhorter Street in the Ironbound Section of Newark. They were also joined by enthusiastic volunteers from Virgin America located in Newark Airport and students from NJIT (Yes…students up at 9 am on a Saturday to give back to their community!).

They all worked together to help beautify a park with and for people that we truly care about. All of our the volunteers worked tirelessly to help make Independence Park the most beautiful Park in all of Essex County. The entire day was a true “Labor of Love”. We all agreed that there WILL BE a 3rd Annual Independence Park Beautification Event next year held on the weekend that coincides with Earth Day.

Please join us for our monthly section meeting with the ASQ NJIT Student Section featuring presentations on Lean Six-Sigma (LSS) NJIT.

Presentation Topics:

1. Quality Project Management Challenges and Solutions (by Olga Kalaba)

This presentation focuses on how the different participants in the construction industry are related to each other, and what the basic documents are everyone is using. It will specifically explain design problems and solutions: contract drawings and specification discrepancies, addendum’s & RFI’s, discontinued products/outdated specifications, installers and manufacturers’ feedbacks. Execution problems and solutions: how to keep track of approved and disapproved submittals, the submittal log on a shared drive with hyperlinks (electronic submittals vs. paper submittals) and examples, approved submittals on the job site, how to keep track of approved systems; submittal library and an example. Closeout problems and solutions: attic stock in execution phase instead in closeout phase, manufacturers’ warranties duration, and closeout log examples.

Total Quality is a description of the culture, attitude and organization of a company that strives to provide customers with products and services that satisfy their needs. Meghana will be discussing the Component Oriented Requirements Analysis (CORA) method and tool. She will show how the tool makes it easier to follow the steps needed to make or improve a product by showing what customers want while highlighing the proposed engineering solutions and performance compared to other competitors. She will also show how the tool also gives you the complete importance rating for each engineering solution, thereby simplifying a company’s assessment as to which engineering solutions to challenge first, second, third, and so on.

3. Visual Factory Management Case Studies (by Michelle Vollo)

In an effort to maximize productivity, and reduce waste, Visual Factory Management Case Studies offers valuable ideas and information on incorporating visual aids into any business. With an emphasis on organization in the workplace, the presentation covers reducing waste and reworking processes through visual factory signs, color coding, workstation layouts, and layered process diagrams.

4. Lean Six-sigma Zero Defect Simulation with a Tolerance Analysis Focus (by Paul G. Ranky)

This interactive R&D presentation and workshop focuses on the basic principles of LSS tolerance analysis with the aim of achieving zero defect. Participants face a real-world challenge in terms of establishing and measuring KPIs (Key Process Indicators) of physical devices, entering data into a statistical software tool and then analyzing and discussing the results.

March 2015 Section Meeting – Cause-and-Effect Analysis: Healthcare Case Study – Medication Errors

Join us for the March section meeting were the topic will be — Cause-and-Effect Analysis: Healthcare Case Study – Medication Errors

According to The Joint Commission, “Errors associated with medications are believed to be the most common type of medical error and are a significant cause of preventable adverse events.” Accordingly, medication errors have been named as one of the “never events” (i.e., events that should never happen). During this webinar, we will look at potential causes of medication errors using a cause-and-effect analysis, and we will look at process-based solutions for preventing these types of errors.
